Subject: Flirting

Dear Righteous Rapper:
I am very friendly with guys. I give them hugs and I often smile at them. My friends call me a flirt. But I think I'm just being nice. Are my friends right? Am I sending the wrong signals?
--Luvable but Confused

Your question is a pretty common one. When guys and girls hang out, it's sometimes hard to know when someone is just being friendly, or when they are looking for someone to date. This is especially true when there's any kind of physical contact. To many people, a hug is just a common friendly gesture. But as you've noticed, other people might see it as something more.

So how do you know what's appropriate and what's not? I'd encourage you to ask your youth pastor, your parents or another adult you trust. In fact, ask several people you trust what they think. If a lot of people see your actions as flirtatious, you should make some changes.

Another thought: Make sure that you're prepared to deal with the consequences of your choices, whether you decide to be a little more careful about hugging and touching, or whether you think your friends are reading too much into your actions. I appreciate friendliness, but I know that some people will interpret it as flirting. Some boys will get the wrong impression. Be ready to sort out the misunderstandings and the hurt feelings that can go with being friendly.
