Subject: Giving Money
Dear Righteous Rapper:
I believe in tithing and give as much as I can to special offerings. But if I wear new shoes or clothes, some people complain I should've donated the money instead. They make me feel like I'm not expressing my faith well enough. What should I do?

Dear Penny:
I wouldn't worry about it. From what you've said, you seem to be very faithful and conscientious in your tithing and giving. I hope you continue this godly and wise pattern!
God doesn't command us to donate every cent we have beyond the cost of rent and food. He doesn't say we cannot replace our old shoes. But he does ask us to regularly and willingly give to his church. If you are doing that, and it sounds like you are, let what others say go in one ear and out the other. The Bible tells us to focus on pleasing God and not other people. "To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand" (Romans 14:4, NIV). And if you can afford new shoes, buy them and don't worry what others say about you. Be faithful to God—period.
One final thought on giving, I hope you'll always be mindful that all the things you have are gifts from God. So when he provides the money to buy a pair of new shoes, don't forget to thank him.
